World experience of hand and other Vascularised Composite Allotransplants (VCA) is growing rapidly.
To date, the International Registry of Hand and Composite Tissue Transplantation (IRHCTT) has registered 72 upper limb and hand transplants. Twenty-one of these have been bilateral, 30 have been unilateral transplants.
Regular activity updates are published by IRHCTT in the journal Transplantation. The most recent is Petruzzo P et al. Transplantation. 90:1590–4.
All but three transplants remain functional. One limb was removed at patient request.
